As autumn paints Humboldt County in rich hues of gold and crimson, it's time to embrace the unique beauty and opportunities that fall gardening brings! We believe that a well-maintained garden can be both productive and visually stunning during this season. This guide will help you navigate fall gardening while emphasizing essential maintenance tasks that are particularly important for our coastal climate.

1. Fall Cleanup Essentials:
The first step in fall gardening is to thoroughly assess your space. With
Humboldt’s wet winters on the horizon, proper cleanup is vital to prevent pests and diseases.
- Remove Fallen Leaves: While a blanket of leaves can be beautiful, they can also trap moisture and create a breeding ground for mold and pests and kill lawn areas. A simple solutions is to place the leaves around your trees to add nutrients back into the soil. When doing this make sure to leave at least 1-2” gap between the trunk and leaves.
- Clear Debris: Remove any spent plants, weeds, and debris from your garden beds. This not only keeps your garden tidy but also reduces the risk of diseases overwintering in your soil.
- Compost Wisely: Consider composting any healthy plant material to enrich your soil. Just be sure to avoid composting diseased plants or invasive weeds.
2. Planting Cool-Season Crops
Humboldt’s mild autumn temperatures provide the perfect opportunity to plant a variety of cool-season crops. Here are some ideal choices:
- Kale: Hardy and frost-tolerant, kale can be harvested throughout the fall and even into winter.
- Spinach:This nutritious green thrives in cooler weather and can be sown until late September.
- Radishes: Fast-growing and easy to cultivate, radishes are perfect for a quick fall harvest.
- Carrots: Plant them by mid-September, and with proper mulching, they can sweeten in the cold.
3. Emphasizing Garden Maintenance
In Humboldt County, garden maintenance in the fall is critical. We recommend the following tips to ensure your garden stays healthy as the seasons change:
- Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around your plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. This is particularly beneficial as we transition from the dry summer to the wetter months.
- Watering: While the rains will soon arrive, keep an eye on your garden’s moisture levels. Ensure that new plantings receive adequate water during dry spells to help them establish strong root systems.
- Pest Monitoring: Fall can still bring pests like aphids or slugs. Regularly inspect your plants and use organic methods to manage any infestations.
4. Preparing for Winter
As you enjoy the fall harvest, it’s also time to prepare your garden for the winter months.
- Cover Crops: Planting cover crops like clover or vetch can improve soil health and prevent erosion during the rainy season. They also provide valuable nutrients when tilled into the soil in spring.
- Protect Sensitive Plants: If you have tender perennials or newly planted flowers, use row covers or cloches to shield them from frost.
- Planting plants and sod installations: If you have considered redoing a garden bed(s), getting sod installed. Autumn is a great time to do so, newly planted plants in this season will get acclimated to their new home and will take off in the Spring.
5. Add Fall Color and Interest
Autumn is an excellent time to enhance your garden’s beauty. Consider planting:
- Chrysanthemums: These vibrant flowers will brighten your garden as they bloom late into the season.
- Pansies and Violas: Their cheerful colors can withstand the cooler temperatures, providing joy in the fall landscape.
- Ornamental Grasses: The plumes of ornamental grasses add texture and movement, creating visual interest as they sway in the autumn breeze.
Fall is a magical time for gardening in Humboldt County. By focusing on garden maintenance—such as cleaning up leaves, properly managing your plants, and preparing for winter—you can ensure a thriving garden that remains beautiful throughout the season. Happy fall gardening!
